PJ Harvey @ Hammerstein Ballroom

Posted by evankessler on October 8, 2004

There’s only two words to describe PJ Harvey’s show at the Hammerstein Ballroom tonight, Fucking Awesome!!! I had never seen her in concert before and she did not disappoint. Ms. Harvey scowled and howled like a banshee and showed off her Rock Goddess swagger onstage tonight opening up with a note perfect version the title track off her1995 album To Bring You My Love which was immediately followed by The Whores Hustle and the Hustlers Whore, pretty much establishing a dark tone for the evening’s performance.

If you were a fan of PJ’s more upbeat and hopeful songs from 2000’s Stories From The City, Stories from The Sea you probably were not going to get much satisfaction from tonight’s show as she focused on material from her newest album Uh Huh Her and the darker numbers from her earlier releases. While I was familiar with much of the material, I don’t know the titles for all of her songs so I’m not going to rattle off every song she played and describe every nuance of her performance. However, I was surprised with just how hard she rocked. I think I could’ve taken some of my friends who are really into metal and they would’ve thought “this chick kicks ass!” It was a hard and heavy hour and a half highlighted by songs like “Who the fuck?” “A Perfect Day Elise”, “Down By The Water” “Meet Ze Monsta” “The Letter” and “Cat on the Wall”, just to name a few.

She came out for two separate encores and during her 2nd encore was playing a song solo acoustic and broke a string, so she had to get a new guitar and start over again. She rarely spoke a word to the audience except for a proper British “thank you” after every song, but the crowd didn’t seem to mind and I certainly didn’t. I was too busy rocking out.

Well, I don’t know how I’m going to top this week. Wilco and PJ Harvey, can you beat that? Two great concerts in one great week. I will sleep well tonight. The weekend is not far away. And there was much rejoicing. Oh and if I get the PJ Harvey setlist I may just post it beneath here. Ok, I just found it. Here it is.
